Outdoor summer wedding

Prince William And Kate Middleton Share First Public Kiss (PICS)

I was a bad half-Brit today (my father is English).

While the rest of the world was buzzing about the royal wedding, I paid no attention to the event.  I didn't wake up in the wee hours of the morning to catch the footage, I didn't check out the guests' fancy hats, and I didn't try to guess at what kind of gown the bride would be wearing.

Still, being a newlywed myself, I do love weddings.  However, the likelihood of one of my readers or myself attending a royal wedding is meek at best - but correct me if I'm wrong.

One thing we may all attend at one point or another (or possibly on several occasions) is an outdoor summer wedding.  Keeping that in mind, here are my suggestions for what to wear (and not wear) to such an occasion...

1. For the love of all that is good, avoid wearing white at all costs.  Leave it to the bride - it's her day.  Keeping that same idea in mind, do not wear super bright colors or an overly bold outfit.  You can wear those any other day during the year - detracting from the bride is just tacky.  Soft, feminine florals are always a good way to go.  Of course, I'm partial to a pretty floral print, but if floral is not your thing, a dress like this would be equally appropriate.  Above all else, just keep in mind that it is the bride's day.  You can stay true to your personal style without diverging attention.

2. If the ceremony is in a field or some other grassy area, try not to where heels, which can often dig and sink into the ground, especially if the ground is at all moist.  Flats are always a safe choice (and easy to dance in), but if you'd like some height, go with a wedge.  It'll give you all the benefits of a heel with the comfort and practicality of a flat.

3. Don't tote around a huge bag.  This is more for your own good than anyone else's.  Keep your basics in a small clutch.  You don't need to stash your whole train case of makeup - just back some powder and lipstick for touch-ups.  Bringing a Tide-to-Go pen is a good idea, as well.  You never know when you'll have a little spill on your pretty dress.

4.  As with your outfit choice, keep you jewelry simple and elegant.  Bold statement pieces can be worn another day.

5. Pack a small paper fan in your clutch.  You'll look a lot more elegant cooling yourself off with it than the ceremony program.

6. Don't wear perfume - it attracts bees, and you definitely don't want to get stung!

There you have it!  My tips for attending an outdoor summer wedding.  Would you add anything?

@Hayley I love outdoor weddings too, but I definitely prefer them in the spring or fall instead of summer in TX, lol!

So true about the bold colors too! You don't want to detract from the bride on her special day!

@herCatwalk Definitely not!

OO your post was very helpful! I have TWO summer weddings to attend this summer in Italy and have never been to one!

I was thinking of wearing pastel colors so I think I'll just do that!
